Why vinyl makes sense on stairs

Vinyl is the only stair-friendly material that’s fully waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet underfoot all at once. For households with kids, pets, or basement stairs that see muddy boots and snowmelt every winter, it holds up better over time than either hardwood or carpet.

The Flooring House installs LVP stairs across Greater Charlotte using the same plank you’ve chosen for the adjoining room, so the staircase reads as one continuous floor instead of a separate project.

Why vinyl makes sense on stairs

The detail most DIY jobs get wrong: nosings

Most LVP manufacturers don’t ship a matching stair nosing, which is why so many vinyl stair jobs look like an afterthought. We solve it two ways — a factory-color nosing when one’s available, and a custom-milled nosing cut from the same plank when it isn’t. Either way, the front edge of every stair matches the tread exactly, with no aluminum trim strip in sight.

  • 20 mil and 30 mil wear layers rated for commercial-level traffic
  • Slip-resistant, micro-textured surface
  • Click-lock and glue-down installation methods
  • Custom nosings milled to match any LVP brand we carry

An install that won’t squeak or peel

Vinyl stair jobs fail two ways — poor adhesion (planks lift at the nosing) or an unprepared substrate (every step squeaks). We use polyurethane construction adhesive plus mechanical fasteners hidden behind the nosing, and we level every tread with skim coat before the plank goes down. If your current stairs are carpeted, we’ll pull that out first as part of the same visit.

Vinyl Flooring Stairs - frequently asked questions

Modern LVP is embossed with a low-slip micro-texture rated for stair use — it’s more slip-resistant than polyurethaned hardwood and comparable to LVT in a commercial setting.

We remove the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip first, then evaluate the treads. Solid wood treads get a quick level and the LVP goes on top; particleboard or damaged treads are replaced.

Not when installed properly. We re-secure every tread and add construction adhesive before laying the plank, which usually makes the staircase quieter than it was before.

With a matching nosing — either a factory piece from the LVP manufacturer or one milled in-house from the same plank. We never fall back on a generic aluminum strip.

Why homeowners choose us

We bring the showroom to you No trip to a big-box store under fluorescent lighting. We load real samples into the truck and bring them to your kitchen table, so you see exactly how a floor will look in your own home before you commit.

Honest, no-pressure advice Ryan spent years on the manufacturer side and on install crews before opening his own doors — he’d rather tell you the truth about a product than talk you into one you don’t need.

A small crew that answers the phone You’re working directly with the family that owns the business, not a call center. Ryan personally checks in after the crew wraps up to make sure the job was done right.

Built for local homes From older homes near the state line to new builds in Fort Mill and Indian Land, we know the housing stock in this area and recommend flooring that actually holds up here.

The Flooring House is family-owned and run by Ryan Davis, who came up as a Mohawk Flooring sales rep before working install crews across the country. We bring real samples to your home for a free, no-pressure estimate instead of asking you to drive to a showroom — and Ryan personally stands behind every job.
It’s how a small, family-run business earns its reputation. We’re proud of our 5.0-star rating on Google, and customers consistently mention Ryan following up personally after the install to make sure everything’s right — that’s not an accident, it’s how we operate on every project.
Yes — carpet, solid and engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and tile, ceramic and porcelain tile, and laminate, for both residential and commercial spaces. We also handle furniture removal and return, on-site area-rug customization, and stair-runner surging and binding.
If you ever notice an issue with your flooring, document it and reach out right away. Ryan and the crew will come take a look and make sure your floor is restored to the condition it should be in — we don’t consider a job finished until you’re happy with it.
