The first thing a guest actually notices

Stairs are usually the first surface a guest touches and the hardest-working surface in the house. The Flooring House designs and installs hardwood staircases across Greater Charlotte that feel solid underfoot, match your existing hardwood flooring, and hold up to years of daily traffic.

We handle it in one trip: removing old carpet or worn treads, leveling the substructure, milling nosings to match your wood, installing treads and risers, and finishing with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty — no juggling separate contractors.

The first thing a guest actually notices

Solid or engineered treads?

Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads are the traditional choice for staircases — they sand and refinish repeatedly and will comfortably outlast a 30-year mortgage.

Engineered treads make sense when you’re matching an existing engineered hardwood floor or working over a concrete slab. They’re dimensionally stable, less prone to squeaking, and finish out looking identical to solid wood.

  • Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory — all kept in stock
  • Custom stains matched to your existing floor with free sample boards
  • Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircase layouts
  • Matching nosings milled in-house when a manufacturer doesn’t offer one

What the three-day process looks like

Day one is demo and prep — removing existing carpet, treads, or tile, clearing the staircase, and shimming any loose stringers so nothing squeaks later. Day two is install: treads, risers, and nosings set with construction adhesive and finish nails, no visible fasteners. Day three is finish work — stain if you’ve chosen one, three coats of polyurethane, and a final walk-through.

What the three-day process looks like

Matching the stairs to the rest of the floor

Most homeowners want the staircase to read as one continuous floor, not a separate project. We stain from the same batch used on your hardwood flooring and match the sheen so the stairs blend in rather than stand out. Prefer a deliberate contrast — dark treads with white risers, for instance — we’ll mock it up on a sample board before we order anything.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions

Yes. We pull the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Solid treads get built on directly; particleboard or damaged treads are replaced as part of the job.

A typical 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days start to finish — demo, install, then finishing. You can use the stairs the next morning, with full cure in about a week.

That’s the goal on most jobs. We bring stain samples to your home and brush them onto the same wood species before ordering, so you’re picking the real color, not a brochure swatch.

No more than any hard surface. We finish with a matte or satin polyurethane rated for low slip, and we can add discreet anti-slip strips under the nosing for pets or small kids.

Why homeowners choose us

We bring the showroom to you No trip to a big-box store under fluorescent lighting. We load real samples into the truck and bring them to your kitchen table, so you see exactly how a floor will look in your own home before you commit.

Honest, no-pressure advice Ryan spent years on the manufacturer side and on install crews before opening his own doors — he’d rather tell you the truth about a product than talk you into one you don’t need.

A small crew that answers the phone You’re working directly with the family that owns the business, not a call center. Ryan personally checks in after the crew wraps up to make sure the job was done right.

Built for local homes From older homes near the state line to new builds in Fort Mill and Indian Land, we know the housing stock in this area and recommend flooring that actually holds up here.

The Flooring House is family-owned and run by Ryan Davis, who came up as a Mohawk Flooring sales rep before working install crews across the country. We bring real samples to your home for a free, no-pressure estimate instead of asking you to drive to a showroom — and Ryan personally stands behind every job.
It’s how a small, family-run business earns its reputation. We’re proud of our 5.0-star rating on Google, and customers consistently mention Ryan following up personally after the install to make sure everything’s right — that’s not an accident, it’s how we operate on every project.
Yes — carpet, solid and engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and tile, ceramic and porcelain tile, and laminate, for both residential and commercial spaces. We also handle furniture removal and return, on-site area-rug customization, and stair-runner surging and binding.
If you ever notice an issue with your flooring, document it and reach out right away. Ryan and the crew will come take a look and make sure your floor is restored to the condition it should be in — we don’t consider a job finished until you’re happy with it.
