Laminate isn’t what it used to be

Today’s AC4 and AC5 laminate uses high-resolution printed wear layers and embossed-in-register textures that read as genuine hardwood from across the room — a big step up from the plasticky click-floor of a couple decades ago. The Flooring House stocks laminate from Quick-Step for Greater Charlotte homes that want the look of wood at a fraction of the installed cost.

It’s the right call when you want hardwood looks but need a tougher wear surface — rental properties, busy family rooms, hallways, kids’ bedrooms, and basement bonus rooms.

AC ratings — the one spec worth understanding

The AC (Abrasion Class) rating tells you how the wear layer will hold up over time. We won’t install anything below AC4 in a Greater Charlotte home.

  • AC3 — light residential only; we don’t recommend it
  • AC4 — heavy residential and light commercial; our default for most homes
  • AC5 — heavy commercial use; a smart pick for entries, hallways, and rentals
  • Water-resistant cores (HDF or SPC-hybrid) — required for kitchens and bathrooms

The install details that prevent squeaks and peaking

Laminate is a floating floor — skip the subfloor prep or the expansion gaps and it telegraphs every flaw and peaks at the seams. We laser-level every floor before install, use underlayment with a vapor barrier over concrete, and leave the proper perimeter gap concealed behind baseboard or quarter-round.

Every laminate install includes on-site acclimation before we start, end-joint staggering for strength, and color-matched transitions to whatever’s in the next room — whether that’s luxury vinyl plank or hardwood.

Laminate Flooring - frequently asked questions

No — laminate has a wood-fiber (HDF) core with a printed wear layer, while vinyl plank has a plastic core and is fully waterproof. Laminate feels harder underfoot but is more sensitive to standing water.

Modern water-resistant laminate handles kitchen spills fine, but we don’t recommend standard laminate right next to sinks or dishwashers.

AC4 laminate typically lasts 15-20 years residentially; AC5 commercial-grade can go 25+ years. The wear layer doesn’t sand or refinish, so once it wears through, it’s replaced.

Yes — every quote includes demo and disposal of the existing floor, and we check the subfloor during your in-home estimate.

Why homeowners choose us

We bring the showroom to you No trip to a big-box store under fluorescent lighting. We load real samples into the truck and bring them to your kitchen table, so you see exactly how a floor will look in your own home before you commit.

Honest, no-pressure advice Ryan spent years on the manufacturer side and on install crews before opening his own doors — he’d rather tell you the truth about a product than talk you into one you don’t need.

A small crew that answers the phone You’re working directly with the family that owns the business, not a call center. Ryan personally checks in after the crew wraps up to make sure the job was done right.

Built for local homes From older homes near the state line to new builds in Fort Mill and Indian Land, we know the housing stock in this area and recommend flooring that actually holds up here.

The Flooring House is family-owned and run by Ryan Davis, who came up as a Mohawk Flooring sales rep before working install crews across the country. We bring real samples to your home for a free, no-pressure estimate instead of asking you to drive to a showroom — and Ryan personally stands behind every job.
It’s how a small, family-run business earns its reputation. We’re proud of our 5.0-star rating on Google, and customers consistently mention Ryan following up personally after the install to make sure everything’s right — that’s not an accident, it’s how we operate on every project.
Yes — carpet, solid and engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and tile, ceramic and porcelain tile, and laminate, for both residential and commercial spaces. We also handle furniture removal and return, on-site area-rug customization, and stair-runner surging and binding.
If you ever notice an issue with your flooring, document it and reach out right away. Ryan and the crew will come take a look and make sure your floor is restored to the condition it should be in — we don’t consider a job finished until you’re happy with it.
